Tech-savvy gold and silver dealer GoldSilver.org has issued a scam alert to investors after photos of counterfeit silver Eagle bullion coins surfaced earlier in the week. Packages of 10 coins each were listed for sale on the deep web site Silk Road for 0.72 Bitcoins. While users can buy some legal items on Silk Road with Bitcoins the majority of the sites products and services are illegal. In certain instances the coins are 24-karat silver but the design has been forged, said GoldSilver.org spokesman John Whittaker. Other times the coins are merely silver-clad.
Whittaker says that counterfeit coins are relatively easy to spot due to their asymmetrical rims and shallow devices. The majority of fake silver coins come from China, but the Middle East is a huge producer of counterfeit gold coins, Whittaker said. Scam artists use real gold to mint counterfeit Double Eagle coins that can fetch huge premiums in the United States, and with the advent of Internet shopping investors must be on guard against sellers of counterfeit gold and silver, especially when something as anonymous and untraceable as Bitcoin is involved.
Whittaker says the companys scam alert means that brokers are keeping their eyes and ears open for suspicious sellers and package handlers will be teamed in groups of three to help spot any fake gold or silver entering the facility. Whittaker encourages anyone who thinks they may have purchased counterfeit gold and/or silver to call GoldSilver.org or email the company with photos of the questionable coins. And, Whittaker added, dont hesitate to contact law enforcement if you know someone is selling counterfeit American Eagle coins because it is a federal offense that warrants an immediate Secret Service investigation.
